our very own nativity play
For the second day of Advent we visited dear friends and had our own little Bethlehem dinner and the First Christmas play. My favourite part was it was coordinated through crazy mama emails (you know the ones: typos and hitting send too soon requiring 3 emails in the place on one), using stuff we all had around our houses, and despite our last minute-ness (is that a word? It is in my life!) the kids loved it!
My friend Kim had great ideas about the meal and Andrea offered to host last minute due to some sickie kiddos. It was a great day to celebrate with friends the coming of Jesus!!
Here is the kid's plate: the hay in the stable (fries), baby Jesus with cloth (mini-bagel hot dogs with a cheese blanket that was added last minute because we managed to burn the dogs while chatting it up), and animals gathered to witness the birth (the veggies with toothpick legs).
The adult feast was fabulous (thanks to the Middle East Bakery in Chicago & Costco)
The kids even some of the spread (with mixed results). Anni and Evy ate tende (dates) by the fistful!
As they were discussing who would play what roles in the play the following was overheard:
me: "Have you all decided who will be who?"
Anni, Angelyn, and Ava: "we want to be angels!"
me: "who will be Mary?"
Ava: "I don't want to be Mary because I am a little embarrassed about the having a baby part"
then there was some rumbling and discussing about whether shepherds had beards
Evy screams above the fray: "I want to be the Barbie!"
We compromised on Evy playing Barbie starring as Mary. Such is our life.
After a long ride to Bethlehem there was no room anywhere. I love Jason's acting in this pic! When he was drafted to be Joseph and donned this small vest he sang "fat guy in a little coat." So many reasons I love this man.
"suddenly, the angel was joined by a vast host of others (ok, 3) praising God and saying, "Glory to God in the highest heaven, and peace on earth to those with who God is pleased."
"the shepherds said to each other, "Let's go to Bethlehem! Let's see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about."
Then a while later (and after a quick change) some Wisemen came bearing gifts of real frankincense (we brought back from our time in Oman and were so excited to use it), gold coins, and myrrh (we never managed to get anything represent the myrrh but picture it...that is if you know what myrrh looks like?)
the cast of our nativity play
our angels.
"but Mary kept all these things in her heart and thought about them often"
We are lovin' Advent around here,
